Assignment Title: COPD with Respiratory Failure

What I learned: This project taught me that nutritional intervention makes a difference in the health of a patient with most any medical condition. Since this patient’s condition was related to breathing problems, many would consider the impact of the patient’s diet almost irrelevant. With research I learned that certain nutrients, a mechanically softened diet with a specific kcal intake, use of oxygen during meals, along with certain interventions like counseling for smoking cessation could actually improve the patient’s condition and overall quality of life.

Reflection: Reviewing the effect of improved nutrition on this very sick patient helped me to realize that when necessary; a specialized diet can make a difference for nearly anyone. I developed an appreciation for the benefits of nutrition in medical therapy.

Relevance: If I eventually choose to work in a medical facility, I can use the skills I developed in doing this project to create specialized diets that will aid patients in their recovery and help them better tolerate the various of treatments they will face in the healing process.
