In-Service Presentation
Skill Area: Foodservice Management
Assignment Title: The Plan for Providing Hospital Food in an Emergency
What I learned: This assignment helped me realize that any medical institution must have a practical plan for feeding their patients in the event of an emergency. I had not really considered the predicament that feeding large groups of people poses when the option of frequent food deliveries disappears. I learned the importance of having a stockpile of shelf-stable food, evaporated milk and plenty of pure water.
Reflection: Once I began to consider the need for an emergency food plan I realized that a nearly infinite number of situations might result in such an event. Something as simple as a storm that knocks down major electrical lines, blocks roads and damages oil refineries may result in a situation that leaves a facility without power for a few days.
Relevance: The information I gathered during this project has helped me to develop a safety plan for my personal life, and that of my family. It will also be useful if I choose a career in food service management, especially in a medical facility.
